#1 In your Reader’s/Writer’s Notebook, describe a time when you viewed something differently from others. What did you learn from that experience?

#2  What do you already know about the sinking of the Titanic? 

·      How do you know? What were your sources?
·      Why is it significant?

Driving Questions:

The sinking of the Titanic was a catalyst for change. What changes were there in American life and what changes in maritime law after its sinking?

What were the reactions from the people aboard, and why were those reactions different? Make sure you address each group: Officers; Crew; 1st, 2nd, and 3rdClass (Steerage), as well as the men, women, and children within each group.

·      What did you and your partner/group do to write a representation of the chapter?  How did you decide what was most important to the gist of the chapter and what was less important?
·      Which written representations were the most coherent and accurate?
·      Why? What specific characteristics made them effective?

·      Reread Chapters 1 – 3 again to choose three moments (phrases, sentences, passages, etc.) that strike you as significant.

·      Make a two-column note chart in your Reader’s/Writer’s Notebook to record the significant moments you select.  Write the moments in the left column of the chart. In the right column of the chart, do a QuickWrite to explain the significance of each moment.

Be ready to share your significant moments chart with a partner in class. Both partners must complete or team gets a ZERO!

Quotations Vs. Paraphrasing
·      What is the difference between paraphrasing a person’s remarks and using direct quotations to represent a person’s remarks?

Activity #8- Answer the Following Questions in your Readers Writers Notebooks:

Locate examples of each in Lord’s text. 
·      What are the differences between them in terms of the effect on the reader?
·      Why might Lord have chosen to paraphrase some remarks and directly quote others?

Throughout most of the book, Lord has kept silent about his own perspective on the sinking of the Titanic.  What does he now appear to be saying about its historical significance? 
Explain using evidence from the text.

Be prepared to share your response with a partner/table group on Monday.

In your Readers Writers Notebook Answer the following Question:

What major things do we learn about this event and the people who experienced it?

Be prepared to turn your RW Notebooks in on Monday for Grading.
Check that your table of Contents is labeled and that your have added new Vocabulary Words in the back of your book.
